Labourer to spend 18 months in prison for stealing N1.2m vehicle


An Ikeja Magistrates’ court Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a 32-year-old labourer, Sulaimon Odedele, to 18 months in prison for stealing a N1. 2 million vehicle property of one Mr Olarenwaju Ayeni.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.J Awope, sentenced Odedele after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of unlawful entering and stealing.

Awope sentenced Odedele to six months in prison for unlawful entering and one year for stealing, ordered that the sentenced should run concurrently.

The magistrate, also sentenced Odedele without an option of fine, said the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.

“You are hereby sentenced to 18 months in prison with hard labour and without an option of fine.

“The sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts,” she said.
Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP. Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 25 at Alaja, Ayobo, Lagos.He said that Ayeni reported the case at the police station.

He said that the accused, a resident of Ota in Ogun, absconded with the company’s vehicle, where he works.
Ayorinde said that the complainant employed the accused in his block industry as a loader of blocks on Nov. 21 but absconded with his vehicle four days after he was employed.

The prosecutor said that one of the complainant’s friends who saw the accused driving the vehicle out of the premises at 8:30p.m called the complainant to confirm if he had sent him out.

According to the Prosecutor, the complainant rushed to his office to discover that his vehicle was missing.
He added that the accused was later arrested at Ilaro in Ogun but had sold some vital parts of the vehicle.

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
